In the latest example of policing gone wrong in Nigeria, four drunk police officers on duty at a funeral in Delta State opened fire on the mourners, killing at least three.
The unprovoked shooting took place over the weekend at Akoko in Delta State after the officers reportedly were under the influene of alcohol after drinking heavily.
Police spokesman Charles Muka indicated that the accused officers had been detained and would face criminal charges for the sooting.
Nigeria’s police vie with its politicians for the worst reputation in the country. Their checkpoints on major highways are used to extort both private vehicles and those used for public transport.
The force is receiving another black eye for its performance at a time when it is showing itself less than capable in stemming the ethic crisis in Plateau state as well as the terrorism of Boko Haram in Nigeria’s northern states.
